BOARD NOMINEES

OHOPE DOMAIN MEMBERSHIP FUTURE CONTROL OF BEACH Short notice and other meetings probably accounted for the comparatively small attendance at the public meeting held at the Captain's Cabin, Ohope, on Wednesday evening for the purpose of nominating six members for the proposed Ohope Domain Board. The meeting, however, was a representative one and showed a keen interest in matters pertaining to the beach and its future development.

Councillor C. R. McCready, County riding representative, presided, and in opening the meeting said that the approval of the Minister of Internal Affairs for the formation of the Board was the culmination .of a long fight. He hoped that Ohope would now make the progress everyone so ardently desired.

In answer to Mr Canning, who enquired the possibilities of an annual grant from the council., the chairman said he considered this a matter which should be taken up strongly by the Board. He himself would do all in his power to as-, sist in this direction as it Avas part-

ly the idea of the Commissioner in having local body representatives on the Board, to enlist the sympathy of those councils. He warned them, however, not to be too optimistic in this direction as the council already had conceded its control to the local residents^

He also pointed out that the Commissioner was very reticent regarding the disposal of the smaller reserves whereby funds could be built up. He adopted the view that these small sections would serye a very useful purpose in the future, when the resort was more intensively populated. Members Elected. Nominations for membership on the proposed Board totalled ten and following a ballot the chairman declared Messrs. F. Mahy, .C Kingsley-Smith, H. C. Kennedy, W. Sullivan, the Rev. J. G. Laughton and C. H. Brebner as duly appointed. These names will go forward to the Minister of Internal Affairs and following his approval, will be gazetted together with the names of a represenattive from the Borough, the County and the Lands and Survey Department. «

The meeting concluded with a very hearty vote of thanks to Councillor McCready for his consistent efforts on Ohope's behalf and the time and trouble he had taken to serve the interests of the ratepayers generally.
