POST OFFICE SITE — MOVE BY PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT LETTER TO HARBOUR. BOARD £ At a special meeting of the Whakatane Harbour Board consideration was given to a letter from the Land Purchase Officer of the Public Works Department regarding the possible pur chase of a site for the new post office. "I have been requested by the Post and Telegraph, Department. to go into the question of securing an area of land at Whakatane for a proposed new post office site. The area of approximately half an acre shown in green on the attached sketch plan (the area marked including sections 3 and 6 leased and the adjoining corner leased to the Fire Board) is suitable. I understand that this land is owned by your Beard and should be glad to hear whether the Board would make the area available to the Crown and, if so, at Avhat price." It was also pointed out that if tlio Board, owned other lands in the locality, the value of such lands .would be enhanced by the erection of a post office. It was resolved that the Board, without commenting on the site suggested for the new post office, which matter will be considered by the Board as its February meeting, is definitely of the opinion that if the Public Works Department wishes to acquire any of the Board's lands for a post office site, such land should be acquired compulsorily under the provisions of the Public Works Act.
