SUPERVISOR'S REPORT

THE BAY OF PLENTY DISTRICT PIG COUNCIL

CLUB ACTIVITIES

"A number of people throughout the Bay of Plenty are growing, a little sugar beet principally by way of trial," said Mr .T. R. Reenberg, Supervisor, in his report to the Bay of Plenty District Pig Council on Friday. "In Whakatane Wright Stephenson's were able to procure seed which has enabled farmers on the - Rangitaiki Plains at "least to have their requirements met. At one time when the seed was very scarce I was able to get a parcel of Danish seed from Mr C. Langkilde of Otorohanga, and several club members have small areas under trial, some alongside the variety Wright Stephenson's have been handling. Messrs Carinell Bros are growing sugar beet for the first time and Jif it is successful with them I think that the crop will be well established in the Bay ,of Plenty.. Club Activities. "At this juncture there 'are 42 Pig Clubs with a total membership of 519. Thirty-four clubs own 42 sows. The clubs for the most part continue to form centres of interest I from which work can be done. j "The work that is proceeding', especially the construction of new piggeries, on these farms, and even on farms belonging to former members of disbanded clubs, is. most gratifying, and leads one to the conclusion that the most fruitful 1 function of a club is to form a centre of contact. A balance has to be struck between purely club work and individual work with farmers, and if there, is a tendency to swing, to the latter it is I think as good as it is, inevitable.

"Against, the immense background of the whole farming district which is the Bay of Plenty, there is pitifully little to show for one's work. I think though that, some foundation has been laid for the development of piggery construction along sound and durable lines based on the principles which are now emerging from our years of trial and error progress. "In practically every district now there a«2 first-class layouts which besides proving profitable and a source of satisfaction to their owners have a value for us wliich cannot be over-estimated. I would like to refer to the splendid co-opera-tion which has developed with" officers of the State Advances Corporation resulting in much..useful work being jointly undertaken in the field of piggery building. This mutu ally helpful relationship should be of considerable assistance to my successor." .
