MUTTON BIRD CATCH
YIELD EXCEEDS LAST YEAR'S OVER 4000 BIRDS . CAUGHT The last party, of 206 Maoris from the Whakatane County who have been engaged in mutton-birding on Whale Island returned to Whaltatane last evening. It is reported that although weather conditions in the main wer« most unfavourable this did not affect the yield, which exceeded last I year's. Over 4000 birds were caught and packed, being shipped to the mainland during the week. The Maoris did not look any worse for their camping life and said they enjoyed it all. There were no serious accidents, the only mishap of consequence being when one of a party fell overboard, losing some gear.
The work of transporting the large party and their equipment "was done by the Whakatane Harbour Board's launch under the command of Captain Carey and the Native committee has expressed its thanks to him.
