ENGINEER'S REPORT
PROPOSED NEW WORKSHOP!
Reporting to the Whakatane County Council yesterday, the Engineer, Mr G. H. Brebrier, outlined some of the major operations fpr the month:— Bridge Construction: Continued unfavourable weather lias necessitated the postponement of the construction of the Rewarau Bridge until this present week . when. the work has once more been put in hand. Repairs to decking have been effected to Titoki Bridge. Tlie following bridges have been painted: Cora bincd road and tram-rail bridge on the Te Teko-Matahina .Road, Marshall's Road Bridge and Keepa's Road Bridge,
Road Repairs: The approach to Savage's Bridge, Bell's Road, has been widened and metalled. Repairs have been effected to.v Onepxi Springs and Parke's Road, Onepu. Maintenance metal has been spread on Taneatua-Ruatoki, Railway East, Ohope Hill and Grace's Roads. Maintenance only of the Secondary Highway is being carried out* Lupins have been cut at the railway intersection on Ross Road.
Grader: The motor grader has graded roads in the Rangitaiki Riding and is now proceeding to Galatea. The horse grader is located at Manawalie. It has been employed, on the Onepu Road, John's Access. Moody's Access, and was engaged on the Mclvor Road, when wet weather intervened. . Further grading
will be carried out on the resumption of favourable weather.
Edgecumbe Water Supply: T have prepared a preliminary estimate of the cost of installing a water scheme in Edgecumbe sufficient to reticulate 30 houses. The scheme is based on an eighteen hour maximum pumping period, the houses retaining their tanks, but being con nected by ball cocks. A sixty gallon pressure tank would be fed by two pumps. One pump could ordinarily cope with the work but' during an extraordinary draw off the second pump would operate when the pressure dropped to 501bs. This scheme coukl be made to serve a large number of dwellings in the future if required. The cost of the scheme complete, including two automatic pumps,, pressure tank, motors, wiring, shed, 2in piping and connections, switchboard, installation and labour on laying mains etc., would be £400.
New Workshop, etc: An estimate has been prepared for the building of a new workshop; 60* x 40' to be erected on the Harbour Board lease. Provision, has been "made for a hydraulic hoist and a travelling chain block. The building could be built on the north eastern corner 'of the lease and the present sheds would be removed and all suitable material used in the new building. The shed would, be large enough to accommodate any. unit of the council's plant, thus allowing work to proceed on it during wet weather:... Five skylights would provide ample light for the fitting bench, -lathe, drill, etc., forge and carpenters' bench. An eleven foot stud will-give sufficient clearance for. any unit of • our plant we have, or are likely to have in the future. The estimated cost of the completed shop arid the ling fencing of the yard is £1000.
The proposed alterations to the office would include provision for a cloak room, removal of northern wall of present Engineer's room, partition in main office, providing two-skylights in the rooms occupied by the Assistant Engineer, counter, etc. and heating stove to cost £100*
