GARDEN PARTY

♦> . '-W SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION WELL ORGANISED BY MRS W. A. • McCRACKEN The garden party organised re-; cently by- MrsXV. A. McCrackcn.... . of Edgecumbe, proved a very; sue-* cessful function. Unfortunately, ow ing to the uncertain weather condi-* tions, it was impossible to use the grounds of Mrt: MeCracken's home and the preparations and decora- ~

tions which had been arranged there had to be abandoned, the guests be-

ing transferred to the Edgecumbe Hall, which was kindly lent free of charge by Mr Bell. -

In the able hands of the many helpers the hall soon took on quite a festive appearance—the stalls being Avell laden with all manner of produce and hand work. An. apron stall under the control of Mesdames. Marx and Rhodes, of Edgecumbe, did good business, while Mesdames Crang, Hodgson and Poole were in charge of a stall for /produce. The ladies of the Matata Maori Red Cross Society presided over another well stocked stall for meat and clothing. » . A feature of the afternoon was an attractive home-made cake stall where Mesdames Goldsmith and Hut. ton acted as saleswomen. The stock of this stall' was the individual effort of Mrs McCracken. who was also responsible for the delicious afternoon tea. and for the homemade supper which was served at the dance held in the evening at / the Edgecumbe Hall. During the afternoon all present wpre invited to the hangi which. - had been in preparation and many: availed themselves of the - opportunity, doing full justicc to the excellent native cooking. The raffling of a two-deck Xmas cake caused some amusement when Mrs McCracken, the maker and donor, drew the winning ticket herself —-however she passed the 'cake in for a re-raffls and this time the lucky recipient was Mrs Moody. A dance in the evening wound up a very enjoyable day, the proceeds of both functions being donated to the War Appeal Funds.
