fire brigadesmen gather SOCIAL EVENING AND PRESENTATIONS The Whakatanc Volunteer Fire Brigade was at full strength aM Saturday evening when a farewell social was tendered to four brigadesmen who are leaving on active service with the forces. The attendance, included Messrs S. S. Shapley (chairman), F. B. Cutler and R. W. Schoiield, members of the Fire Board, Superintendent K. Ward and members of the Rangitaiki Dairy Co's Volunteer Fire Brigade and Mr W. Bradden, ex-Superin-tendent of the Hokitika Fire Brigade. The latter is grandfather of Superintendent F. H. Stewart, who presided. i

After proposing the toast of 'The King,' Superintendent Stewart referred to the very efficient and sincere service rendered by the four brigadesmen leaving, Foreman Norman, Secretary Faulds and Firemen Cannell and Hall. He detailed their records and said it would be sec m l , from them that "the brigade was losing a big percentage of its efficient strength. The men had given their services freely in a civic duty. Wishes for Safe Return. Replying to the toast of 'The Fire Board,' the chairman, Mr S. S. Shapley remarked on the brigade's high standard of efficiency. To the brigadesmen leaving he expressed the Board's sincere wishes for a good voyage and a safe and speedy return. Endorsing these remarks Mr Cutler said the town was fortunate in the personnel of the brigade and there was a great appreciation for the work done. Mr Sehofield, also complimenting the brigade, said those who-could go with the forces would' have to go and to. the four men leaving, lie wished them well in their going.

Presentations of money belts were made to Foreman Norman and Secretary Faulds and Firemen Cannell and Hall were the recipients of tobacco pouches. Toast Honoured. Toasts honoured during the evening were: "The King," Superintendent F. H. Stewart; "United Fire Brigades) Association," Superintendent E. Ward; reply by ex-Super-intendent W. Bradden; "The Fire Board," Foreman Norman, reply by Messrs Shapley, Cutler and Sclio--field; "The Men Leaving;" Deputy Superintendent T. Hurndell, replies by Foreman Norman, Secretary Faulds and Firemen Hall and'Cannell; "Brigadesmen on Service" Fireman Allan; "The Visitors" Secretary Faulds, Mr Villis (Edgeeumbe); "The Ladies" Fireman S. Dent; "The Superintendent" Mr S. S. Shapley and Superintendent Stewart.

Firemen Cottrcll and Miles a!nd Mr Clark formed an orchestra fb'r the evening and individual items were presented by Mr Clark (violin), Fireman- Miles (violin), Fireman ' King (guitar) and DeputySuperintendent Hurndell (vocal solos).
