SEASON CONCLUDES

PRESIDENT'S REVIEW

The Whakatane Golf Club brought its season to a close on Saturday, November 2, when Driving and Approaching and Putting competitions were held for both men and ladies, prizes Avere presented, to the season's winners and the ladies dispensed afternoon tea. The President, Mr L. W. Luxton, in reviewing the season's operations, referred to the war conditions as affecting the club and, while deprecating such, said he thought it was our duty to carry on and we had done .so most successfully. He was proud to announce the names of the seven teen of our members who were now on active service and he wished them and others who would be following all the best of luck, victory and a safe return. All these members were retained on the club's full membership list for the duration of their service. . The club was also proud to w r elcome,' that day, the presence of a past member, Sister R. Black, who was the first lady from our district to be proceeding immediately on active service .and' in wishing lier the best of everything he assured her that her services and those of her sister nurses would be thankfully appreciated hv the boys at the front. Coming back to golf, Mr Luxton said the season had been most successful in every other way. Our membership had sulTered very little and he was glad to see a considerable influx of junior members who, would later take their place in the senior ranks. The club's annual tournament was reduced to one day and was veiy successful, in fact it attracted the second highest number of entries we had ever had, 91 in all, including 45 visitors. The course had now been brought up to a very high standard and already compared favourably with any in New Zealand.The club's finances were also on a very sound basis and we could look forward to future successes. Mr Luxton congratulated the prize winners for the season and welcomed and thanked those visitors present for their attendance*. Mr Stone, President of the Mokorua Golf Clu.b, responded and congratulated the club on its successful season. The season's trophies were then presented as follows: — Men:—April Medal: A. Henderson; September Stableford: D. Allen; Four-ball Bogey: A. Milne and P. Horrocks: September Medal: A. Standrin; Jun ior Eclectic: T. Henderson; Ringer Competition: C. Herrold; Approach ing and Putting: A. Newman; Driving: C. L. Roberts; Captain's Prize: Dr Dawson; Veterans' Tournament: A. Powdrell; Runner-up: C. Herrold; Colts' Tournament: L. B. Smith; Runner-up: W. Henderson; Fortune Cup: L. Rangi; Runnerup: C. Hyland; Founders Cup: L. Carter; Ruuner-up: C. Suckling: Clarke Cup: 11. Hill; Runner-up: | D. Allen; Reynolds' Cup: Dr Dawson; Runner-up: L. Grey; Junior Championship: L. Norriss; Runnerup: L. Grey; Intermediate Championship: L. B. Smith: Runner-up: A. Moore; Senior Championship: C. L. Roberts; Runner-up: L. Carter. The list of ladies' trophies will be published on Monday.
