BAY CRCKET
ASSOCIATION MEETS
CHANGE -IN SELECTION METHOD
The chief item of discussion at the eighth annual general . meeting of the Bay of Plenty Cricket Association, held at Matata, was the proposal to transfer the Association's" head-> quarters from Rotorua to Whakatane. Included in this lengthy discussion was criticism of the selection of Bay of Plenty teams Sub-Association' representatives at tending were: Messrs Musgrove (chairman),, Birkby and Beale (Rotorua), Wickham, Crowley and A. Beale (Pongakawa), Spring, Cleland, Warren and Day (Rangitaiki) with apologies from Mr Godsalv>? (Rotorua) and Mr R. Cleland (Rangitaiki) . When the election of officers came before the meeting Mr Spring said that in view of existing illfeeling, the election should be post- j poned until the iiucstion of the j headquarters transfer had been resolved. Mr Spring also said .that he regretted the publicity which . had been given to differences within the Association and it would be iirefer- | able for matters appertaining to the Association to be settled by' that body and not be the subject of 'Letters to the Editor.' Mr Wickham criticised the selection of representative teams and said that the selector had little opportunity of seeing all players in action because of a lack of -trial matches. The system of control was not at fault, nor was the selector.
•Tribute to Selector
Mr Birkby said that the selector, Mr Bailey, had carried out his duties to the best of his ability buthad been a very -harassed man and had had difficulty in securing players of representative standard. The opinion that the appointment of a sole selector was the cause 'of the - trouble was expressed by Mr Cleland, who said that he had nothing against the control,
Mr A. Be ale (Pongakawa), complained that his Association had not received an invitation to nominate players for selection, The difficulty could be overcome by playing a number of trial matches. Said Mr H. Warren (Rangitailci), and these would give the selectors an opportunity of seeing the players in action.
It was finally resolved thai the headquarters of Bay cricket should remain at Rotorua and following the election of officers it was decided to revise the rules of the Atlrill Cup in order to assist selection. The challenge rules will he replaced by a competition, with two rounds of home and away matches, games to be decided on points.
