"Have you applied for someone to take his place since he was called in the ballot?" asked the chairs man of the Manpower Committee, Mr R. Coulter, at Thames, to a
farmer who was supporting an appeal on behalf of his employee. "No," was the reply,, "but a neighbour of mine applied to Paeroa and was told that there were no men available. The authorities there suggested he would have to cut down the size of his herd. The chairman (in surprised tone). Cut down the size of his herd? Witness: Yes, Sir. No further comment was made by the chairman in connection with this remark, but earlier in the sitting of the committee he had initmated that the committee fully realised the necessity for the upkeeping of primary production.
