WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

WHAKATANE BRANCH INTERNATIONAL DAY OBSERVED Tlie November meeting of the Women \s Institute was observed as an International Day, and a table of cliina from other countries was exhibited. Dolls in costume had been dressed, by members for competition, the placings being as follows: Mrs Moran and Mrs Ste\vart equal 1, Mrs C'airns 2. A collection of materials, toys and useful articles was made for the Lepef Colony, and the proceeds of. the Trading Stall and donation £1 lis 6d, also went to this worthy cause. Arrangements were made to hold a Christmas Tree for of members and children of soldiers in the Borough, the date fixed being the usual monthly meeting of the,. Institute, December 3rd. It was announced, that up to date 266 garments had been despatched - for the Lady Galway Fund. A special sewing day is to be held in the King Street Hall on Wednesday, 13th November, when anyone able to assist is asked to come along and sew in order that-another batch of clothing may be sent off before the Xmas holidays. The Roll Call for the flay Avas "Customs of Other Lands * and. many amusing customs were revealed, members unprepared with an answer being fined in the usual manner* . Volunteers tc sell goods, at the Red Crossi and Patriotic Shop on Friday Bth, were plentiful, and members were asked to .support the Institute's first day of business, as much as was in their power, by donations of goods and by their custom at the shop. ' After the business of the meeting was concluded, Mrs, Phillips enter- r - tained with two delightful Welsh songs. An instructive and , amusing talk was given by Mrs J. Pearson on her recent trip io~ Europe, the speaker having a particularly happy nack of taking her listeners along >yith her on her travels. The results of competitions were announced as follows: Best Flower, Mrs King. Home-grown Salad, Mrs Wlieeler 1. Mrs Moran 2.
