Rowing Reason Opens
the whakatane club GOOD PROSPECTS AHEAD Although the attendance was not as good as usual, the offi-i cial opening of the season, .for the Whakatane Rowing ' Club which took place on Saturday attracted a large number of prospective members who will, if they carry out their promise to join up,* build the club up to something approaching its prewar strength. The absence of the usual visiting crew from T'aurange robbed the day of any attempt to sta>*e an inter-club com petition, but in spite of this drawback, a friendly race between picked local crews gave an interesting turn to the programme. The fact that a school bov team has been selected from lads who have just left school, and that many of the ex-members are re-joining has helped to fill the thinning ranks of oarsmen who have enlisted. Saturday's race was over a mile distance and resulted in S. Dent's crew (Taylor, J. Dent and Caipiell with G. Moore as cox) winning after a close race against B. Norman's crew (R. Stewart, H. T'liorburn, D. Wilson with P. Moore as cox) . Afternoon tea was later served jn the club's shed where the prospects of the new season were discussed.
