COUNTRY OF RUMOURS
SNOWBALL GROWTH IN THE THIRD REICH TRUTH MUST WIN OUT The Third Reich is a country of rumours, says a Berlin correspondent of the New York Times. They circulate with amazing rapidity, unquestionably. becoming distorted, as they go from ear to car. But they are ever present. The extent to which they go and the form thai they can assume in spite of the, absence of' Press remarks regarding ! the United States are illustrated by I a question asked an American by his cook Hie other day: "'ls. it true that Germany lias declarccl war on the United States?" There is profound conviction in Germany—a con viction that is a result not only of the propaganda campaign but the succession of German victories— that this war is going to be won by .the Reich and that it is .going to be won quickly. The test of the effect iivoness of the German manner of reporting news, however, will come should- the Reich suffer a severe set■baek in the future course of the •*ar without mentioning any conditioning factors.
