PENALTY FOR MAORIS A TERM OF PROBATION V " "I made a mistake in connection with the sentence I imposed upon ' you yesterday," said Mr Justice Blair in the Supreme Court at Hamilton on Wednesday, when addressing Potahi Rchu, aged 29, and Haimorm Oketopa, aged 33, Vho had been found guilty 01 breaking and entering the post office at Paengaroa and stealing a safe and its contents ; valued at £50. His Honour said he had imposed -a term of six months' imprisonment to be followed by five years' probation. He added that as far as the Supreme Court was concerned it had power to make a term of probation follow a period of imprisonment. The Prisons Board had certain powers, in this respect. His Honour said ' he would have to alter the sentence and get rid of the term of imprisonment. " The prisoners were admitted lo ■-probation for five years on the same terms as those imposed on Tuesday, \ that they take out prohibition orders for the whole period and pay £30 jjjjM 4 - eachjowftrd restitution and the costs - prosecution.
