MAORI FARMER'S WAR EFFORT.
MOST gratifying is the report of the Waiariki Native Lands Board on the effort to produce more, made by Maori farmers in pursuance of the Dominion's war effort. The Te Teko Maoris have put down an additional acreage of maize and barley approximating 500 acres and from other parts of the Bay of Plenty the various native settlements have contributed a further additional 2000 acres. From these figures it is patent to observers that the Maoris are fully cognisant with the need to produce more foodstuffs and can be relied upon to fall in line with pakeha farmers who are likewise endeavouring to do their utmost under the cramped circumstances of labour shortage, and compulsory military service. Congratulations to those Maoris who by their loyalty and patriotism are performing a duty parallel to those other valiant young men of their race now serving with the New Zealand Military Forces on the cause of Empire.
Local Men in England. Several photographs showing men of the Second Ecihelon in England include volunteers from this district. One photograph of the Maori Contingent showed no less than six local men.
50,000 Debt-free Babies. As a result of the Social Security Act there are at the present time in New Zealand over 50,000 debtfree babies. This statement was made by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Parry) at Kaitaia.
