t TAX ON INCOME OTHER THAN SALARY OR WAGES LIABILITIES DEFINED ; In this issue appears an intima--1 tion from the Commissioner of Taxes that the November instalment of the Social Security Charge and National Security Tax on income other than salary or, Avages derived during the year ended 35 st March, 1940 falls due on the Ist November, and is subject to a late payment penalty of 10 per cent if not paid within one month from that date,, In the case of taxpayers who have paid Social Security Charge in full, but who have not yet made any payment on account of National Security. Tax, attention is drawn to the liability in respect of the latter tax. The total National Security Tax payable is an amount equal to three-quarters of the Social Security Charge already paid in full. The second instalment of the National Security Tax is due on the Ist November, 1940, and the balance on the Ist February, 1941. Persons who are in doubt as to their liability are advised to make inquiry at the nearest money-order office as early as possible during the I month of November, 1940 in order to avoid penalties on late payment pf any amount they may be lfoble to pay during that month. Penalties. A quarterly instalment (os) of the Social Security Registration Fee payable by male persons twenty years of age or over also becomes due on the Ist November, 1940 L Failure to pay any instalment ot

the fee renders a defaulter liable, on summary conviction, to a fine of £5. In addition a penalty of sixi pencc per month automatically accrues if payment is not made within one month from the due date. Any employer Avho employs for more than seven days a person Avho is more than one month in arrear with an instalment of the Registration Fee, is liable, on summary conviction, to a fine of £20. Employers may deduct the amount of any overdue registration fee from the Avages payable to employees. The Commissioner also draws attention to the fact that anjf male person 20 years of age or over Avho is not in possession of a Registration Fee coupon book covering the November, 1910 and subsequent instalments, is required to obtain a neAv book in the manner indicated,
