It was resolved that the should indicate to the disputants that its policy in regard to Kirkbride's deviation was that il should remain a public road and that it be suggested to those concerned that the matters in dispute should be submitted to arbitration, -each to appoint an arbitrator, the decision of- whom would be final in accordance with the provisions of the Arbitration Act, 1908, and thai the matters for submission be whether the gates remain and cattle stops be constructed and that the deviation be pot fenced, or, alternatively, that~|jf>e- gates be removed, without the erection of cattle stops, the road to ioe fenced. Committee's Consideration. Letters on the lines of the Works •Committee's suggestion were approved by the council and were forwarded to the respective parties, with the addition: "The council feels that the position has reached .a stage where further Court proceedings would be considered bj' the magistrate to be farcical and trivial" The chairman said that the Works -Committee had given the matter much consideration and thought that an attempt should be made to reach a solution. If a conference •could be arranged it might-be possible to arrive at an understanding acceptable to both.
