NO FIREWORKS
-v r <• »» TAME OUTJLOOK FOR FIFTH IMPOSSIBLE TO PROCURE - ; Children this year will be of the thrill of fireworks on ber the fifth. The position has come about mainly as a result of the restrictions on imports owing to war conditions. But there is also another reason and that is the cessation of the manufacture of fireworks by-the Christchurch company, flie premises; of which were burnt down two years ago„ Shops in Whakatane which _ . usually carry large stocks about th's time are now the possessors of only meagre carry over supplies from last year. An enthusiast from' the" country has written to the BEIACON offering a suggestion that in spite of the' fireworks effort should be made this year alVu'sual in order not to disappoint the children. He suggests that a large bonfire- be built on the reclamation adjoining the Strand and that a fancy dress procession of children be arranged ~ to pafade the main street to the scene about 8.30 p.m. The occasion could be made one for raising funds . for patriotic purposes and he further suggests that effigies of Hitler, - Mussolini, Goering and Goebbels be burnt at the scene of action, and the whole night's entertainment be . rounded off by band selections, lollie scrambles for the children and impromptu entertainment. The suggestion is a good one and requires only a ' little enthusiasm, and energy to be put into effect.
