ENGINEER'S REPORT RAGWORT ERADICATION COMMENCED . Major, items in the monthly'.' re-r port of the County .Engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner, were:— Bridge Construction: The cutting of the diversion drain at the Rewarau Bridge site lias been completed. Suitable, piles have been procured and the election of the bridge will be proceeded with at the earliest possible date. Timber for the provision of rails 011 Bell's Road Bridge has. been ordered and the work will be completed when it comes to hand. Culverts and Drains: The installation of a floodgate on Nielson's drain on the Railway West Road is in hand. One 12 inch pipe culvert on the Ohope Hill Road has been lifted and re-laid. One. 12 inch culvert on. Raroa Road has been moved tb a more suitable location. Webster's drain, adjacent to the Tam>* atua Road, has been cleaned.. - Road Repairs: While the' traekson slfovel is employed in the Pekatahi Pit, maintenance metalling his been carried out on Railway East, Ohope Hill and Taneatua-Ruatoki Roads. The horse grader, drawn by one of the old planer has this day commenced the periodical grading of the Manawahe roads,. A section of the Kopeopeo Drain Road, for a distance of some 25 chains "from thfi Whakatane-Mataia Highway, has received a light coat of metal. Backing of a dangerous corner of the Railway Road has been carried out. Grader: The grader has worked on roads in the Otakiri district, and is now employed on roads in the Rangitaiki Riding. Moody's Road, Onepu, lias been formed up. Ragwort Eradication:. Work on this scheme commenced on Monday, 7th October, some 12 men being employed on native unindividualisetl land at Poroporo. An k additional gang comprised of 12 men commenced Monday 14th October at Te Teko> working down the eastern bank of the Rangitaiki River from Te Teko. The spraying methbd.lifts been< adopted this season, >It is anticipated
that sufficient sprays will comc to hand this week to enable a gang to commence operations next week in." the Waimana .district. Miscellaneous: A contract has • been let for the effecting of alterations and improvements to the Rangitailii cottage. The contract fop plastering the Qhope dressing sheds being now completed the remaining work can be put in hand this week. Leaks in the Matata Water Supply reticulation have been repaired.-. The olading of ballast at Pckatahi has continued tinoughout the period.
