ARRANGEMENTS MADE
TOBACCO FOR TROOPS ' LANDING FREE OF DUTY Consignments 'of tobacco and cigarettes for free distribution ~to New Zealand troops abroad are to be sent from the Dominion at regular intervals in future instead of being included in the parcels shipped by patriotic organisations, according to an announcement made to the Auckland Provincial Patrio- ! tic Council. It was explained that this arrangement Avould enable .the consignments to be packed by the tobacco companies in bond, shipped under one permit and landed free of duty at their destination. The question of the high duty levied in Egypt on tobacco and cigarettes in private parcels sent to New Zealand soldiers there was rais ed by Mr J. A. C. Allum* who said be had been informed there.was a possible arrangement whereby tobacco companies could have tobacco and cigarettes delivered to soldier? in Egypt on private order without high'duty. He suggested an endeavour be made to Jiave such an arrangement brought into effect. The matter was referred to the standing committee.
