THREE TO ONE

BETTING ON ROOSEVELT'S CHANCES Betting on the result of the Unitnow three to one in favour of a cd States' Presidential election is third term for Mr RooseveltA 10 days' speaking tour through the western States by the Republican candidate, Mr Wendell Wilkie was a complete failure, according to the Roosevelt forces. They claim that the farther Mr Wilkie went and the more he talked, the more did Mr Roosevelt's chances improve. He made some bad slips in his first address', corrected himself in the next, and then, for three days, lost his voice entirely. In one speech, he used the phrase "damned dumb" nine times in 25 minutes, and left a cold, unresponsive audience. He is a smart business man, full or' short-term wisecracks, but completely lost when he comes to make a calm, considered address on public affairs. Journalists aboard his special train, while visiting Seattle, said tliat they could not see how this "amateur" could win against an experienced politician like Roosevelt.
