TO-NIGHT The public is reminded that the Whakatane Men's Patriotic Committee will conduct a determined drive for the sale of 'Runnerstrum Raffle' tickets in the Strand this evening between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Provision has been made for a concert party to entertain shoppers, and this party, which will be mount ed on a truck, will base operations at the monumentj The Whakatane Ctizens' Band will be in attendance and will provide selections at 7 p.m, 7.30 p.m. and 8 p.m. The canvassers at work will be Messrs C. As the result of a very successful card, evening held at the residence of Mr and Mrs Blair, Edgecumbe, the sum of £20 0s Id was handed over to the district patriotic committee; Over fifty guests attended, assistance in the arrangements being tendered by Miss Joe Hall and Other helpers. The donation of the amount raised was acknowledged by Mr lan Gow, who expressed the thanks of his committee. ENTHUSIASTIC SPIRIT PATRIOTISM AT NATIVE SCHOOL Since the outbreak of war the pupils of the Paroa Native School have shown a particularly enthusiastic spirit in responding to all forms of appeals and the "Beacon" acknowledges: s a further effort i*n the donation "of £1 to the present fund. Previous donations from the school have been £2 2s to the local Red Cross and a donation of £17 to the proceeds of the Maori concert held some weeks ago. Then. Mr E.. R. Runnerstrum gave the children' £5 to be used for patriotic purposes. The spontaneous manner in which they applied themselves speaks for itself—for by their own efforts entirely they have tripled this sum,. taking it to £15. _ _ ■ . EDGECUMBE DANCE AIDING PATRIOTIC FUNDS The Edgecumbe district patriotic committee wishes to acknowledge with thanks the successful effort made by Mr and Mrs Villis and Mr and Mrs Colin McDonald in Presenting a dance at Eldgecumbe to assist district patriotic funds. The event was a most enjoyable one, where an excellent floor 'arid freedom from overcrowding contributed greatly to the pleasure ;of the dancers. ' The thanks of the committee are tendered to the Gaiety Boys* Orchestra, which made a donation of its services. '
