A SOLID JOLT
WHAKATANE SHAKEN Mi D-DAY yi SIT ATI ON Following on two minor shakes in the early morning, AVhakatane experienced a very solid jolt at about 1.80 p.m. oil Monday when an earth tremor .which lasted for about one minute shook the town and district. The phenomena was heralded by .3 loav, rumbling sound, and appeared to come from a south-easterly direction in a series of defined waves. In the town wooden buildings creaked ominously and small articles rattled and were dislodged. In one or two instances there was mild alarm /as the 'quake grew in intensity but no one has been reported to have been unduly affected. Inland, and in most places on the Rangitaiki Plains, the movement was felt with varying intensity but tat Oliope it seemed to commence with a slow roll, which rattled windows and doors and actually •caused trees to sway. It would appear that the shock in~ this locality was felt with- more force and was possibly of a longer duration.
