District's Patriotic Activities
OVER £450 FUND GAINS IMPETUS CONTINUED RESPONSE TO APPEAL Continued generous response to the appeal for funds for the relief of distress in London and l the rehabilitation of and assistance to members of New Zealand's fighting forces, together with the transfer by donors' per mission of subscriptions made to the 'Spitfire' Fund, swings the total of the BEACON list ta over £450. If is again made clear that the list is in support of His Excellency the Governor-General's appeal for £1,000,000 for patriotic purposes. Though initially styled the, 'London Distress Fund,' the money collected will be used also for rehabilitation in New Zealand, assistance to men ol the forces and to relatives of mem hers and ex-members of the forces, provision of sporting facilities in the various camps, etc. When the indiscriminate bombing of London with the attendant devastation and loss of property and personal effects by its-citizens first occurred, an appeal for aid' was made by the Lord Mayor of London and Lord Gal way, as Chairman of the National Patriotic Fund Board, immediately cabled £100,000 out of the National Fund. Provincial Patriotic Councils were then asked to make up £25,000 of this amount. The Allocations. The appeals for subscriptions were mainly addressed through the newspapers of the Dominion and so immediate and generous was the response that the amount asked for was soon over-subscribed. In order to avoid separate appeals (the present'was scheduled to commence on October 15) it was decided to incorporate that for the relief of distress in London and other areas in Britain which had suffered as the result of air-raids with the campaign for funds for the other purposes listed. The allocation for the Whakatane County is £3750 and of this amount the Borough, with the inclusion of Ohope, is expected to raise £1125. It must be stressed that these allocations should be viewed as strictly minimum requirements, as pointed out elsewhere. The 'Beacon' List. Sent away to a flying start upon its inception, the. fund opened at the BEACON Office has continued to grow, rapidly and at j)resent reads-: j
OUTSTANDING INTERIM COLLECTION OF £217 AT EDGECUMBE A very fine effort by do-nors in the Edgecumbe area gives a magnificent lead to the remainder of the district in connection with the Dominion-wide appeal for funds to be applied to the relief of distress, rehabilitation, etc., and along with acknowledgment of donations made we are glad to accord publicity to the following statement from the Edgecumbe Patriotic Committee; Subscriptions during the past month were made as follows: — j |
The statement reads:—■ Some of these amounts represent part only of greater amounts which have been promised. Further sums have been entered for payment in the near future and they will then* be acknowledged. The Edgecumbe Committee wishes to thank those who . are giving su,ch capable and ■ willing help to the Ladies' Committee both in social activities and in the running of the patriotic shop. Much of this valuable assistance and many substantial donan tions of stock and produce must of necessity remain without public acknowledgment but the committee would like it to be understood clearly that the above-mentioned sums represent part only of a united effort which is being made to provide Edgecumbe T s share of- the money which is so badly needed* It is desirable, the committee's point of view, that all district donations for the present appeal should be made through the local organisation for, in this way only, I will it be recognised that this corner of the Rangitaiki has played its part. | It may be of interest to readers to know that the Edgecumbe Patriotic District has been divided into six areas with a member of the men's committee in charge of the canvassing of each area. The areas and canvassers are as follows: — No. 1 Area (River Road) in charge |of Mr F. Patience. ! No. 2 Area (Gow's Road) in charge of Mr I. B. Gow. No. 3 Area (Otakiri Road) ?.n charge of Mr J. Black. No. 4 Area (Railway Road and Awaiti Road) in charge of Mr D. S. Radcliffe. No. 5 Area (Awaroa Block) in charge of Mr A. Thompson. No. 6 Area (Township) in charge of Mr D. Spence. The canvassers of the remaining areas will in the near future be visiting the residents of their respective groups when, it is hoped,, their efforts will meet with the same measure of generositj' - as has been experienced to date, for it must remembered that the quotas expected of any district are regarded as strictly minimum requirements. In addition to the above donations, we have received:— (Continued foot of previous column)
Gentlemen, the Ladies! "The .ladies are wonderful in their way but one of their ways is riot clarifying the positional am afraid" said Mr lan B. Gow at Wednesday's meeting of the Inter-Zone Patriotic Committee. n m * n Herr H.: Do you know anything about these Australians, Hermann? Herr G.: Nein, mein Fuhrer, except that eleven of them oiice beat all of England. Then there was the detective who put down all his deductions on nis income tax returns. m.* m ■ M Judging by the number of reservists in this district who for various reasons are medically unfit for service with the Forces, there is likely to be onlj r a small percentage of those drawn entering camp when allowance is made for wastage, on this and other grounds. If this district is a true indication it might almost be necessary to have another ballot for 16,000.. • ■ ' m a » An R.A.F. pilot named Samm, Dropping bombs on the junction at Hamm, Rather peeved Uncle Hermann, The corpulent Germaim, Who muttered "Oh, dear me, Damm Samm!" «mm ' m From a New Zealand newspaper: "It is scandalous to see these society women going about with u poodle on the end of a string when a baby would be more fitting.'*
