WHAKATANE BRANCH CELEBRATION OF ELEVENTH BIRTHDAY The Whalcatane Institute held its lltli Annual Birthday Party in the Parish Hall on the Ist i'nst. After the business of the meeting Avas concluded, the President extended a hearty welcome to members of sister Institutes, one of the visitors being a member of the Institute at Carterton, Wairarapa. A feature of the afternoon Avas the excellent number of entries for the competitions, the results of Avhich were as folloAVS:—Bowl of Flo Avers for Effect: Mrs Albiston 1, Mrs Mayo and Mrs Millar 2, Mrs Canning 3. Vase for Effect: Mrs Mo ran 1, Mrs Darvill 2, Mrs Mulholland 3. Best Flower: Mrs Canning 1, Mrs Brown 2, Mrs Lysaght3. The Avinne'r of the Wall Competition Avas Mrs Moran; and a game Avas Avon by Mrs Matthews. The tableau presented bj r members in costume Avas most effective, and Avas accompanied by Mrs Millar's rendering of the Institute song "Comrades and Friends, " in the last verse of Avhich all present joined in the singing. A play "Tea Time Scandal" staged by members of the Drama Circle under the direction of Mrs Norman. Those taking part Avere Mesdames Burgess, Sims, Albiston, McKenzie, Norman and Morgan. The audience shoAved its appreciation times during the play and also by a hearty burst of applause at its conclusion. Members AA r ere reminded that the Trading Stall at the November meet ing Avould be in aid of the fund for Lepers, and that the Wliakatane Institute ladies were to stock the Red Cross Shop on the Ist Friday in the month of November, Avhcn all Avere asked to assist by gifts of fruit, vegetables, cakes, produce, etc The next meeting of the Gardening Circle is to be held at Mrs Ryde's residence on the 3rd Tuesday in October.! The of the Sewing Circle in connection Avith Lady Galway's Fund Avas able to report that 100 garments had been remade up to date. A dainty afternoon tea was seized by members, the Birthday Cake, made by Mrs Sutcliffe, being cut Avith due ceremony by Mrs N. Carter, President of the Taneatua Institute. A portion of the Birthday Cake not consumed Avas sold, and proceeds -added to the Emergency Fund.
