RACING NOTES

Returning to New Zeaalnd. Advice has been received that jockey L. H. Clifford, who has been riding in India for over 12 months, intends returning to Auckland shortly. He will doubtless apply for a license to ride in this Dominion again Very Probable. It is reported that there is already a disposition to support Beau liepairs for the Mitcfielson Cup, one mile and a half. This Hamilton owned Beau Pere representative will be all the better for his run in Avondale Cup a fortnight ago. A Presentation. Wagner, a winner at the Grand National meeting in August last has been presented by Mr C. O. Rutherford, of Canterbury,-to a friend, who it is said will use his best endeavours to keep the gelding sound enough to win again in due course. Winter Cup Winner. Lady Tinkle, winner of this sea-i son's Winter Cup, has been brought in from a well-earned spell. This mare is a great favourite with the sportsmen of the Wellington vince, and if she comes to Ellerslie for the Auckland summer meeting, she will have a big following of southerners. Place Card Betting. Quite a number of selectors who picked the four placed cards to the etxent of £4000 with one of the biggest place card operators in Melbourne this month have been more than disappointed at the non-receipt of their winnings. They have merrely been informed that the operator intends to refund them the money they invested. The New Zealand Cup. The handicaps for the New Zealand Cup to be run on November 9, made their appearance on Saturday, and have been a matter of interest to the many sportsmen throughout the Dominion, who study the chances of at least the best performed candidates. Out of 61 entrants only about one-third of the number have been good performers) leaving over 40 with but poor chances of victory in the two miles event. Great Northern Guineas. The Great Northern Guineas won last year by Beaulivre is expected to result in a great contest for supremacy between the Wanganui Beau Pere colt, Sir Beau, and the Te Aivamutu representative, Beau Leon. Then, of course, there are others, notably Lou Losa, who by running second in the Avondale Guineas, Avhen not up to "concert pitch,,'* may have to be seriously considered.. Natural'lty he will have improved since his last outing, a period of lour weeks. Appeals Upheld. The appeals of jockeys Tattersalj, P. Burgess, E. Didham, H. N. Wiggins and W. Brougliton against their conditional riding 'licenses were heard before three judges at Wellington. The first three riders were successful and will now be granted licenses for the full racing season. Wiggins' & Broughton's appeals were not upheld, and their protest fees of £10 each go to the Racing Conference. Their conditional licenses up to November 30,, sStill hold good, and in the meantime their riding efforts will be very carefully watched, meeting by meeting. Big Betting Figures. The visit to Australia of the New Zealand three year olds, Beaulivre and Beau Vite for spring contests, has resulted in some big betting figures being noted. Beaulivre, the favourite for the Epsom, has been coupled with Metropolitan candidates to the extent of £75,000 and consequently there are at least a few bookmakers just slightly perturbed over the fact. Naturally they would like to see a way out, and to this end the owner of Beau Vite has been approached with an offer of £20,000 to a small amount to take °n the Epsom. This owner, however is not at aW anxious to meet Bdaulivre over a mile course, and had already centred his hopes in Avinning the Metropolitan, of one mile and a half.
