RACING NOTES

FULL SISTERS WIN RARE EVENTS AT PAEROA'S FIRST DAY MANY COINCIDENCES When Foxmond Avon the Ngatea Handicap on the first day of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club's Spring Meeting at Paeroa on Saturday and Volifox was successful in the last event of the day, the Kerepeehi Hack Handicap, a chain of coincidences resulted. It is rare (in fact we have no record at all) for full sisters to win on the same clay at the same meeting. Even more rare, we guess, for two full sisters to win for the same interests on the same day at, the same meeting and even more rare for the same jockey to ride full sisters Avinning for the same interests on the same day at the same meeting. v And here Ave go for some interesting facts. Foxmond is a four year old black or- brown mare, by Foxbridge—Volimond, bred by her owner, Mr P. A. (Alex) Swney, .at Waihou, near Te Aroha. She has won some good races in her short career, the most notable, of course, being her victory' in the Great Northern Oaks. Volifox, a three year old filly, is also by Foxbridge—Volirnond, and was bred by Mr Swney. She ran one or two good races as a two year old last season, revealing gameness and a great turn of speed when the pressure Avas applied. The Kerepeehi Hack AA'as her first success. Incidentally, it is very interesting to note that Foxmond took the Kerepeehi Hack last year. On Saturday both Avere ridden by the apprentice, S. Waddell, Avho secured his first winning rides. Mr Swney, by the Avay, has been Well knoAvn in the racing world for many years, success coming his Avay in latter years per medium of those splendid performers Mungatoon, Lagoon and Golden Sheila. Mr Swney trains his' horses at Waihou Avitli the assistance of Mr Harry Preston, former prominent flat, hurdle and cross-country horseman. Should Make Good. .The name of Silver Hope lias been gi\ r en to the Hunting Song—Ten Doll three year oltl, Avho Avill race in the colours of Mr J. Lowry, of Hastings. Track watchers already agree that he is very speedy. Changes in Locations. The Railway- Handicap Avinner, Bromven, has joined the team presided over by George Ncav at Palmerston North. Verulam, a recent double winner* trained by Hector Gray at Takanini, has gone back to her OAvner's stable at Avondale. Lexden Re-commissioned. The NeAV Plymouth trained Lexden AA r ho in the summer of each year is brought to compete at Waikato and Te Aroha meetings, is reported to have come in from an extended holiday in splendid trim. haA r ing thickened out materially. Next February he may be brought south again in vieAV of more prize money. The Country's Revenue. Racing clubs are still willingly doing their part in assisting the revenue of the country, and especially in time of Avar is all the more noticeable. A special case under fnis heading is that of the Wellington Racing Club at its annual meeting of members Jast week 'the president, Mr Eric Riddiford, said: "The totalisator investments of £847,704 broke all records. We distributed £44,100 in stakes, and Government taxation amounte'd to £81>85o. This latter sum represents totalisator, dividend, stakes and amusement tax—in addition clubs arc now .called upon to pay income tax and social security tax so all told the GoA'ernment AA r ill benefit to the extent of £88,000 on this year's operations.

Very Substantial Increase. Particulars have now been compiled in respect to the Dominion's totalisator turnover since the present racing season opened on August 1. For sixteen days racing and six days trotting up to September 21 no less than £818,369 "was registered, an increase of £111,543, compared with £7.1G,826 for the corresponding days last year.
