THE COUNTY HOUSING LOAN
Sir,—l regret to see that the Whakatane County Council still persists in trying to push through the housing loan without reference to the ratepayers. Such procedure is most undemocratic and an insidious un-> dermining of the liberties of the ratepayers and peoplte. We ajre spending millions of pounds and thousands of lives fighting for the liberty of our people world,, and yet there are take away one of the principles of our own liberty. If this matter was submitted to a vote of the ratepayers, I am sure it would get short shrift. To my mind the scheme is most unsound, unjust and uncalled for. As one councillor if the increased value of the farm by the addition of another dwelling on the property was; not sufficient security to the Government - for ifhie advance, the proposition was an. uneconomical one, and the farm was not a paying proposition. Neither is the present a proper time to launch such a doubtful building scheme, when the cost of labour and material is 150 per. cent above normal. No doubt many think to gain by the project, as there is al-r ways a desire with so many people to get something for nothing when some other person foots the bill or, rather, the cheque. - Yours etc,, A. MUG. (The position at present is that notice of motion has been tabled for the rescission of the council's adoption of the Rural Housing Scheme. The motion Avill be put at the next monthly meeting.
