THE OUTCAST IS NOT FORGOTTEN.
Appeals in endless procession attend us today. The war Has created it own insatiable hunger for men,, material and money. But we note with some satisfaction, the persistence of the still small voice, which has annually over the past ten years appealed for Christmas Cheer for the Lepers of Makogai Island. Last year this champion of the world's outcasts had the satisfaction of seeing his charges, of their own free wi11,,, set aside a, certain sum of the monies raised through his media, for Red Cross purposes. This year Mr. P. J. Twoomey is onae more on the job, gently reminding the charitable-minded of these unfortunates who are shunned by their fellowmen in all . countries. By his efforts he has made it possible for a "Gift Shop" to be despatched each Christmas and from the reports of those who are sacrificing themselves in the interests of the patients on the island, the arrival of this vessel is the greatest event of their dull lives. They have not been forgotten by their friends, the New Zealand people ,in the past; they will not be forgotten now, in spite of the anxiety of the war and its uncertainties, tbe public of this country can be relied upon, to give thought to those who are afflicted and suffering through no fault of their own.
