TWO-FACED
KILLING SEVERAL BIRDS WITH ONE STONE HOW THE GOVERNMENT ECONOMISES ON PAPER - Almost legendary are some of the stories dealing with the very necessary economy in the use of paper but a Whakatane resident called into the BEACON Office yesterday with the 'copy' for the best story yet. It was an envelope, which, upon examination, told its own ta^e. The envelope was one of those long brown manilas and, as a matter of fact, had contained a communication from a Government Department. The first thing noticed was that the cover had been used previously and the.new address had been typewritten on another sheet and then pasted over the top of the old address. That, 3 r ou will admit, was sound economy. But that was not all. Further examination revealed the astounding fact that the sheet which had been used to cover the old address was part of another old envelope and by holding the cover to the Mglit it was possible to read the inscription. So that the Government is setting a wonderful example in the art of killing several birds, if not with a stone, at least with a razoriblade and a dab or two of paste. Trying to explain it verbally should provide much amusement for the long winter evenings but players with tongue-twister experience will have the advantage because it seems like a case of using a used envelope to use a used envelope.
