OBITUARY
MR FRANK CYRIL YEOMAN The death occurred on Sunday of Frank Cyril Yeoman, prominent ~ farmer in the Opouriao -district and well known throughout the Bay of Plenty. Born at Devonport, Auckland, in 1874, the late Mr Yeoman was one of. the first ten scholars to be granted free places for secondary education and lie attended the Auckland Grammar School until he went to Opotiki, in 1890, to learn farming. Four years later he purchased his own property at Waiotahi. In 1898 he married Miss Mary. Blomfield, of Auckland, and in 1901, a few years after Estate had he bought the presejse3i*TOperty. Yeoman was for many years n member of the Whakatane County Council and Bay of Plenty Hospital Board. Among his other connections, he was a director- of the Opouriao Dairy Company from its, inception and was a former president of the Whakatane and Rarigitaiki A. and P. Association. He was associated withyfii. Andrew's Presbyterian ChurcliJß((fnieatua, being one of the original elders and acting as choirmaster formally j r ears. For years he con r ducted the Sunday School at Opouriao. He is survived by his widow and a family of eight, Major Gilbert Yeoman, N.Z.M.R., at present in camp at Ngaruavvahia, resides at Taneatua, Lieutenant Alfred Yeo man is with the 3rd Echelon, Lieutenant Allah Yeoman is in Britain with the* 2nd Echelon and Mr Selwyn Yeoman resides in Whakatane; Mrs A. K. Prince, of Taneatua; Mrs A. E. Hill, of Murupara; Mrs S. Clinton- Williams, Mission Bay, Auckland, and Miss Elsie Yeoman, of Taneatua.
There are 19 grand-children. MR CHARLES GEORGE JARRETIT The death occurred at his residence, Leamington, Cambridge, on i September 6th, of Mr Charles George Jarrett, father of -Mr, William Jarrett, of Whakatane. The late Mr Jarrett was born at Longmaston, Gloucestershire, England, in 1852. He attended school for three years ond commenced work at ths age of eight, his first job earning him. threepence a day for working from sunrise to sunset scaring rooks away from the cornfields. Promotion came shortly afterwards when he secured a position at fourpence per day milking five, cows. _ . - Mr Jarrett had a cousin who secured him a position as a porter on the Stratford-on-Avon railway station and he remained there until his apprenticeship, to a wheelwright and blacksmith in the neighbouring town of Honeybourne at the age of sixteen. For the four years of his apprenticeship Mr Jarrett walked the five miles to and from work each day, often through snow and hail. His term concluding, he sought further fields and for three years was .employed at the works of the Midland- Railway Company, Birmingham, at 30s per week. Joining a firm of . contractors he, remained with them for some years and in 1881, at the age of 2s, he left for New Zealand with his wife and two children. . / Travelling in the New Zealand Shipping '-Company's 'Avona,' a vessel of 700 tons, Mr Jarrett arrived in Auckland'after one of the roughest passages ever experienced by a sailing vessel, and travelled by rail (the line at that time terminating at Te Awamutu) to Oh aup o, from wheuce he went on to Cambridge. In common with other pioneers Mr Jarrett experienced many setbacks in his eariy efforts on the land but he developed his farm and be-» came one of the most prominent land-owners in the district. He was responsible for the first shipment of butter to Engl ark^^teal t with in another article). A prominent member of the Masonic Lodge, Mr Jarrett was also connected for a long time with local body work, especially for the benefit of Leamington, being elected to the first Town Board and holding the office of chairman for some time. Always working for advancement in every sphere, Mr Jarrett was respected by all with whom he came into contact and earned esteem by his indefatigable efforts for those in distress.
