DIMINISHING NATIVE BIRDS
A_WELL known sportsma,n in this district-reports that the native bird life in the surrounding bush reserves is being seriously endangered by the: prevalence of wild cats which are multiplying in alarming numbers. These cats domesticated pets in the first instance, are driven to the bush by thoughtless owners who purposely 'lose' them or drive them away when they become a nuisance, but today they are becoming a menace and unless checked, may well set the seal on the last remnants of our rare native: bird life. Already in New Zealand, through the senseless destruction of her forests and the indiscriminate shooting of birds peculiar to her shores, has lost an asset beyond price of redemption; Now through a further act of criminal shortsightedness the last of the struggling representatives appear to be threatened with extermination. These: are facts which must be faced and acted upon before it is too late..
