HOSPITAL BOARD'S SHORT MEETING SALARIES AND WAGES INCREASE DISCUSSED The Bay of Plenty Hospital Board met on Thursday with Mr J. W\ Sumner, Chairman, presiding over Mrs E. Gi McCracken and Messrs L. Buddie, F. J. Burt, A. F, McGougan, F. J. Savage, R. W. Scho-* field and C. A. Suckling and with the acting-Secretary, Mr A. Bridger, and the Medical Superintendent,' Dr. E. Tewsley Dawson, aliso in attendance. Routine matters constituted a light agenda and the meeting was somewhat shorter than usual. Regarding the additions to tiie Maternity Annexe and the domestic quarters, the Department of Health advised that the plans were still in the hands of the Public Works Departments The Chairman reported that the Health Department had been communicated with on numerous ocasions during the past month, both by telephone and telegram, and a telegram had been received on Wednesday .stating that the Public Works Department's comments on the plans were being forwarded on that date. , Increase in Salaries arid Wages. There was some discussion on the general five per cent increase in salaries and wages when a letter was received from the Hospital Boards? Asvsociation requesting an expression of opinion on the matter. Mr Suckling moved that the Association be advised that. the Board is not in favour of a general five per cent increase . in salaries aiid wages to the nursing and other staff not covered by the Arbitration Court order as it had always given increases to meet changing conditions and that by providing free board and lodging to the majority of the staff' has itself stood the principal increase in the cost of living. This motion was seconded by Mr McGougan and carried.
