RACING NOTES
Another Hurdler.' H. Rama's Surveyor ■gelding., TooIcy Street, is now being schooled I over the obstacles at Te Rapa. The Poland Cup. The Poland Cup, to be run at the Ohincnmri meeting on 28th inst, will be run over eleven furlongs, the prize money being £350. ' Flying Acre. One of the most improved horses trained at Matamata is Flying Acre, and he is expected to take high honours before the present season has fa* advanced; A Purchase of Note. The well known Waikato sportsman, Mr W. Hosking, has purchased the highly bred imported colt r Tweed 11. He is by the French Derby winner. Hot Weed and has won over distances up to a mile and a half. Probably for Avondale. By his win at the Wanganui-Eg-mont meeting the Foxbridge—Bell« Star representative, Minority, has practically worked out of the hack class. He may, however, fulfil his Avondale hack nominations, for which he is still eligible. Imported from England. The English bred colt, Pardment, trained at Trentham by H. Telford, is said to have furnished materially during recent months. On the tracks he has shown plenty of speed, and great are the expectations in regard to him making good with the colours up. Deal Did Not Eventuate. Just before the Longbeach Handicap at the Grand National meeting Shmy' Burgess offered to exchange Augiiient for Taxpayer, but D* McDonald, owner of the latter, was not fortunately interested. Taxpayer won and Augment was second* - A Splendid Result. Last month the Rotorua Racing Glub staged, a one-tiay meeting in order to assist the Patriotic funds. At the annual meeting of members JastCwcek, the president, Dr Bertram, announced that the profit was £487, to Avhicli would be added the Government subsidy of £ for £. This is yet another good mark for 4,, The ■Sport of .Kings," Orelio Improving. '•■■ The Limond—Water Wings representative, Orelio, is reported to have furnished very materially during the" winter. He was re-commissioned a month ago by trainer Fred Smith, of Takanini, and is galloping very freely. One of his best performances last season was in the role of run-* iier-up to Beaulivre in the Great Northern Guineas, He may be more solid this season, and if so will cer-j tainly add to his winning list. Exigencies of Training. After galloping five furlongs at Takanini last weelc with. Gay Missy Mazis showed signs of soreness. This means that trainer J. H. Wallace may have some difficulty in getting the Whirlwind gelding to the post for the Avondale Clip* in his best form. Another tinder a cloud just now is the Hon. E. R.Davis? and Mr O. Nicholson's Gamos, who in the course of a track gallop had- to be pulled up consequent upon an attack of bleeding.
Density Resumes. ' Last season Canterbury introduced to the racing public the Pink Coat filly, Density, which showed extreme brilliancy, and was soon acclaimed a sprinter of very high rank. After a winter spell in good surroundings, she was brought in again last week, and a southern writer who enthusiastically inspected the mare wrote: '"She appears to be a hundred per cent better mare than last year." If this be correct she should be this season's topnotch sprinter, and in the meantime her track work will cloubtless be of decided interest. Jockeys' Appeals. ; Last month there was some" consternation in the ranks of jockeys when in the issue of riding licenses for 1940-41 only additional permits for three months were issued to eight of the Dominion's* leading riders. The folloAving week there were rumours to the effect that pro-? tests would be entered by each and every one of . those affected by the decision of the Licensing Committee, but it is now stated that five of the horsemen had taken, action through their legal adviser, Mr G. S.: Thomas, of Christchurch. Those appealing are A. Didham, P. Burgess, S. Tattersall, W.Broughton and H, N. Wiggins.
The Epsdm Handicap. ' . The well known and successful! Sj'dney trainer, George Price, has a> strong hand m respect to the Epsom Handicap to be run on October sth,: with* the two very brilliant- milers, Miklura and Beaulivre. The firstnamed, ridden by-Darby Muhro, won the Campbelltown Handicap at Rand' wick in a very convincing manner, and later in the afternoon the: same - rider rode Beaulivre to victory inthe Warwick Stakes. Brilliant times' were registered by both horses, and : remarkable to relate it is stated that.-' Munro confessed his inability to say • which one gave the better perform--ance. A fortnight ago Mildura's owner, Mr Watt, proposed to withdraw hi 9 horse from the Epsom and at that time Munro was selected to* ride Beaulivre: In the. meantime he is not likely to knew which horse ' he .-"will actually ride in the greatcontest. - -' ;' RACING FIXTURES SEPTEMBER. 14—Ashburton County R.G.
