THIN END OF WEDGE
TRAFFIC INSPECTOR'S UPKEEP BOROUGH CONTRIBUTION ASKED 'T think this is only the thin: end of the wedge," said the Mayor, M,r B. S; Barry, last Monday! when, relating to the Borough Council details of a recent in- : terview he had had with Inspector Ainsworth, of the ..Traffic. Department. T anticipate that we are going, to lose these" license * fees when- the-Government hasa stocktaking after the war, but we can stall off the date in the meantime." Mx- Barry-explained that the Borough had been requested to contribute towards some proportion of Instructor Delves' salary, the department claiming that prior, to his ap* poiiitment the Borough had to pay
ofi'iceer.s of its own to control the traffic. It was thus spared this expense and so it was thought four that some contribution-be made. In that eventuality the local olficer would be prepared to enforce the local borough by-laws and -could be given some direction in .this respect. Broadly speaking he thought the request fair enough and had ed to the Inspector that the Borougiv contribute a third of its revenue. Gr Canning agreed that the request was fair, and the Mayor there upon moved the lines indicated, Cr Sullivan in support said that a third share was a reasonable one in view of the cost of the borough overheads and that the Government should not expect more. The motion was carried.
