PAYING TOO MUCH
CONTRIBUTION FROM BOROUGH SANITARY INSPECTOR'S SALARY What will probably come as a mild surprise to the Health Department was the discovery by the Borough Council last Monday evening, that on the department's own figures the Whakatane Borough is paying in advance of its assessment towards the Sanitary Inspector's salary. In a comprehensive manner, the Town Clerk produced figures .to show that with salary, car and sundries, it had cost the Eastern Bay of Plenty area £609 in 19«8, £658 in 1939, and £639 in 1940 to keep tfte official employed. Whakatane had been asked by the Department to increase its proportion to 66' per cent instead of the rate ruling at present of 41.5 per cent. On a population basis it appeared that the town was already paying far in excess of the old figure and even a little more than the new rate which was asked for. From the collective figures of Opotiki Borough and County and Whakatane Borough and County, it was obvious that the Whakatane County with its population of 10,700 was under-assessed and enjoying this benefit at the expense of the other local bodies, especially the local Borough; Cr Shapley-: How did the department make the mistake? Cr Canning: Oh easy! On the Mayor's motion it was decided to write pointing out that on the Department's own figures the Whakatane Borough was already paying more than the 66 per cent, which was asked for as an increase.
