NEW WATER PUMP
BOROUGH COUNCIL'S DECISION OUTLAY OF £1200 ANTICIPATED Following the recommendation of the Works Committee, the Borough Council, last Monday evening decided to purchase a pump and necessary equipment . to the value of £846 10s. It was pointed out by the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, that the probable cost with installation would be in the vicinity of £1200, and that there was small possibility of delivery this year. The deputy-mayor, Mr S, S. Shap-i ley, as chairman of the works committee introduced the matter and said that after careful consideration it had been decided to recommend one of the more expensive pumps owing to the heavy nature of the work it would required to do. In the water from the river there was a considerable mineral element and suspended pumice which would have a detrimental effect on any but a first class pump. It was especially equipped with rubber bearings, and the price included besides the pump Itself, the motor, starter, filter and spare parts. The Mayor observed that there was little chance of tlie installation taking place this year, and the expense • would therefore be spread over two financial periods.
The Engineer stated that the present pump was in its fifth year, and had cost in the vicinity of £480. It was imperative in his mind to have a device which could deal satisfactorily with the local conditions. Persons who had complained of the cloudiness of the water in the past, had no conception of the state it was in when it first entered the main. It would also be required to pump against a 300 ft. head. In his opinion it would be wise to get the best pump possible. a . Cr Sullivan in congratulating Mr Shapley on taking the initiative this time, moved that the recommendation be adopted. He pointed out that the number of consumers had grown and would continue to grow in future and the council should be safeguarded against the increasing demand. Cr Canning seconding, precluded a unanimous vote by the council in support of the i)rojecL SATISFACTORY TESTS BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY Reporting to the council, the Medical Officer of Health, gave details of the bacteriological examination of samples of the water supplied to consumers in the Borough; He added that he was Very satisfied. The Mayor: Well we've had several tests made and all are highly satisfactory.
