Mitchell Wray, aged 25, wkot < had been at large since noon oil Friday* following his escape from a police escort while-pro-ceeding from Rotorua to Whakatane on remand on a chargei of abduction, was recaptured by Sergeant M. Farrell, of Whakatarie, on Sunday night. The prisoner was in -a very distressed conditioin when apprehended .-at Fenton's Mill, a few miles from the place where he had been allowed to alight from the police car on the pretext that he was ill. On Monday afternoon, when he ■was charged, with abducting a female under of 18, the Court had to sit iirWiis cells of the Whakatane Police Gaol. Mr G. A. Brabant, J.P., \Vas the presiding Justice; Mr B. S. Barry represented acidised and Sergeant Farrell appeared for the police, making application for a remand to September 10, and stating that other charges were pending. Barry applied for bail and this was not opposed by the police as it was found necessary to remove the prisoner le hospital for observation and medical attention. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £100 -each. -
