ENGINEER'S REPORT
WORK IN THE COUNTY CONDITION OF TE TEKO PLANTATION In his monthly report to the council, the Whakatane County Engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner, stated:— Bridge Construction: The installation of a sft diameter, pipe eulvert to replace a former wooden bridge at the foot of the Matata-Rotoma Road has been completed. Two additional piles have been driven to strengthen the bridge over the cut on Burt's Acccss RoadBridge Repairs: Repairs to handrails have been effected to bridges on Railway West and Eastern Drain Roads. Repairs to Richardlson's bridge on the Taneatua-Ruatoki road have also been completed. Three bridges on Railway E,ast Road between Whakatane West and Taneatua have been repainted. Decking repairs were carried out to Langenbcrger's bridge. Culverts: The folloAving culverts have been installed: Matata-Rotoma. Road S2'/12", 12'/36"; Wainui Road GOV 6"; Railway East Road S'/G", 2712"; Downard's Road 50yi2„" Bell's Road 18'/24"; Smith's. Access Road 30'/12." Road Repairs: Considerable damage was caused by the last heavy rains. Slips were brought down oh Stanley Road, Matata-Rotoma Road, Wainui Road, Railway East Road and Ruddick's Road. Repair work lias now been practically completed. Patching has been carried out on Te Jvooti's Access, Railway East, Stanley, Foster's, McDonald's and Te Teko-Galatea Roads. Road Improvements: Construction Avork on the IC2 Road, Waimana,, is in hand, the trackson shovel be-< ing employed as Aveather conditions permit. The Trackson ShoA r el Avas also used in the formation of A. W. Smith's Access Road, ReAvatu, comprising 13 chains of 15ft roadHvay.
Te Teko Plantation: In company Avith Professoor Crbin, I inspected the Te Teko Plantation, A thorough survey Avas made and the Professor Avas astonished at the large number of trees that haA r e fallen. It would appear that most of the trees Avill be lost if they are left as thejr are. Very feAV are large enough for milling but the lot could be sold to the Paper Mills for pulping and the area could then .'be replanted. The Ayater level is much loAver uoav than AA T hen the trees Avere planted and the neAV trees Avould make much stronger roots. Matata Dam: Soundings AA r ere. taken at the site of the proposed neAV dam at Matata and an estimate made of the cost of the dam and of the relaying of the pipe line from the dam to the railway line. Dam £120, pipe line £40. Ohope Eastern Reserve: The Trackson High Shovel is at present engaged in clearing ancK levelling off the public picnic ground at the eastern end of Ohope Beach. Ohope Dressing Sheds: Quotas haA'-e been received for plastering the interior and exterior of the Ohope dressing sheds as folloAvs: One coat Avork £62 ss, two coat work .£BB. Ohope Drainage,- Complaints have been received, from residents situated at the eastern end of Ohope. Levels have been taken and it is suggested that the Works Committee should inspect this locality. Grader: The grader has.worked in the Tarawera Riding until a breakdoAvn occurred requiring major repairs. Miscellaneous: A dividing fence has been erected at the Taneatua Domain,, severing a portion for a future camping resei - A r e. The re-erection of the fence bound ing the Pigeon Cutting Stock Paddock has been completed and the stream bed cleared out.
