NO SQUEALING, SAYS V.C.'s WIDOW The 21 year old widow of LanceCorporal 11. Nichoils., V.C., of the Grenadier Guards, laces life bravely on a pension of 31s a week for herself and her eight months old baby. Her husband's gallantry in trance on May 21 gained for him one of the first two Victoria Crosses awarded to Army units' in this war, but subsequently he was killed! in action. The bounty accompanying the Vic toria Cross ccases with the recipient's death. Mrs Nicholls told the Daily Express: "Father died of wounds in the last war and mother died a month later. Now Harry has gone, but I'm not squealing. I've always go this," and she kissed her baby. "•When 1 get the medial from the King," she added, "I shall wear it around my neck all my life. Piobably I will resume lace-making at Nottingham, which I left to be neai niy husband in London.'* (A V.C. award carries with it a special allowance of £10 a year for each winner below commissioned rank,, with an extra £5 a year for every bar. The annuity may be increased to £50 if a winner is unable to obtain a living on leaving the service.)
