GIRL HERD TESTERS
NEW ZEALAND WAR EFFORT TRAINING AT MASSEY COLT-.EGK Still another field] of activity more often held by men than women has been opened to the latfer as a result of the war. Several girls from various parts of the Dominion. among whom is Miss J. Gray, of Mangcre, have gone to Massey College to take a course in herd testing. Although women have taken up this work before, opportunities for success have been rare. The course will take three weeks, after which the girls will endeavour to get appointments in districts •where vacancies have occurred owing to men having joined up. At present, however, they arc merely being placed in reserve, as none of those filling these positions has yet been called up. The girls will learn to take samples from the evening's and morning's milk, then test it to obtain the percentage of butterfat in the milk, and to discover which are the best cows in the herds. It may be that in addition to assisting in the war effort, these girls will pioneer yet another.new career for women.
