ARMS— AND THE HOME GUARD
High hopes for the swift inauguration of the Hon. R. Semple's Home Guard and the keen d.esire of thousands of ex-diggers and others to get down to definite business, have been somewhat damped by the complete absence of any mention of arms for the defence volunteers. The programme outlined was commendable as far as training and physical culture were concerned but unlike the Minister's fiery statements when in Whakatane, there is no martial ring, or the reassuring affirmation that small arms and machine guns would be supplied. This may have been an Oversight, ,but with the whole country eagerly waiting for something tangible by the way of defence ipeasures, it is rather tame to be informed.- that the Home Guard will train over four periods, the keynote of which will be "physical jerks" short term camps and. route marches. We would welcome a return of the Minister's inspiration and confidence together with a straightout assurance tha,t arms and ammunition will be plaaed in the hands of the men who are willing to fight in the defence of their country.
