HOW NAZIS LIE TO STIR UP HATRED
In an effort to stir up an even deeper hatred of Britain, the Nazis are concocting a series of alleged British war atrocities. The aeronautical correspondent of The Times says that German soldiers, sailors, and airmen arc warned that if they are taken prisoner by the British they will be not only half-starved, but subjected to gross indignities and ill-treat-ment reminiscent of the Spanish Inquisition. Tales Are Believed The extent to which the Germans believe these blatant falsehoods is indicated by the relief of prisoners when they learn that they will be well treated. When assured that they will' not be harmed, their surprise turns to anger against, the authorities who deliberately lied to them. The same thing happened in] France, where German airmen' who were taken prisoner showed fear of the awful consequences they had been assured would follow their capture. One young air gunner believed that red-hot needles would be thrust under his finger nails unless he divulged German aircraft secrets. After confessing his fear, he was so relieved to hear the commanding officer's amused reply that he burst into tears.
