MILITARY HOSPITAL

ERECTION IN ROTORUA PLANNED , SANITORIUiVI INGLUDED Following the visit of Dr. R. A. Shore, Assistant Director-General of Health, ancl engineers of the Public Works Department to inspect sites in Rotorua it is expected that the preliminary steps will shortly be taken to erect a new sariitorium'. It is understood that this will be preceded by a building possibly of a temporary nature to be used as a military hospital, therapeutic treatments once again playing a large part in the recuperation of New Zealand soldiers. Although no definite announcement has been made of the exact site selected it will be to the north of the present main bath building, and will probably encroach a little on to the Motutara golf course between the club-house and the tennis courts. Extensive boring operations to test the suitability of the foundations were carried out there last year by the Public Works Department. Oiw^si^ai^ilumcroleJ n the area is T not considered to present unusual difficulties. The size of the military hospital is not yet decided upon,, but it is understood that the Public Works Department is preparing plans at present for this and for the sanitorium. The new sanitorium will eventually replace both the building fronting on Hinemaru Street and also the main bath buildings which has served as a centre for therapeutic treatments since 1907. The existing sanitorium building provides accommodation .for 70 patients, but for many years there has been a long waiting list. The new building is .being planned to date 120 beds. Although it is understood that every endeavour will be made to erect the military hospital speedily, it is not yet known whether work on the sanitorium will be delayed until after the war. Difficulties in obtaining supplies may be a factor delaying construction. Final arrangements are expected to be made for the hospital next week, Dr. M. H. Watt; DirectorGeneral of Health, will visit Hotorna.
