Semple, to address a i meeting of county residents at Edgecumbe during his next visit to f the district in connection with j home defence, has been extended t by the Whakatane County Council. s In a letter to the Minister, the 1 County Clerk, Mr C. G. Lucas, after 2 referring "to the Hon, Rv. Semple*s " expressed intention to re-visit the * district in the near future, and out- ? lining the emergency precautions scheme prepared for the county, - j says: "The Chairman proposes now to > set up his committees in each dis-> ; trict, leaving the enlistment of the - , general personnel until immediately after your visit, which will give out local preparations the impetus [ they would otherwise lack. In this : matter Mr Burnett respectfully . asks that you address a meeting, preferably in the . early afternoon, , at the centrally • situated county , town of Edgecumbe. "A meeting there would mean : that a population running into some thousands would be given the opportunity of hearing yoii with- . out being required! to travel more than twelve miles. The petrol re- [ strictions make an Edgecumbe meet ing desirable."
