SMASHING GERMANY'S CANALS
The Dortmund-Ems Canal, which has been bombed and put out of action by Royal Air Force 'planes, is one of Germany's important artificial waterways for the transport of heavy goods. Dortmund itself where the canal begins, is in West-* phalia and is the centre of an im* portant railway system. There are coal mines in the which; feed furnaces for the manufacture of steel, iron, machinery, and railway plant,- for which Dortmund is well known. There are also large breweries and chemical works in the town. Essen, another big German manufacturing town, is in the same district. Ems, the other end of the canal, is on the estuarj r of the river, opposite the German air base, Borluim, and close beside the Dutch frontier. Germany's system through tliis part of the country links up. with -1110 Dutch system in Northern Holland; % Bridge Building. Disappointment that the proposed new bridges at Tirohanga and' Waiotahi will not now be proceeded with was expressed at the month y meeting of the Opotiki County Council. While it was recognised that the war had made it impossible to carry on with many works, the council considered that such a favourable tender as that obtained for the Tirohanga bridge might not be ignin available.
