THE RAINS CAME
WHAKATANE THOROUGHLY WASHED STEADY FALL CONTINUES This- morning sees the commencement of the fifth consecutive day of almost continuous lain, wit'i si fall approximating five ■ inches. Starting in the early Hours o) Thursday morning, rain fell sleadilv throughout that day and although conditions eased somewhat on Friday, it continued to fall. Some particularly heavy showers were recorded on Saturday, especially from noon until 2 p.m., the intensity increasing during the night. Yesterday was wholly wet and last night saw the steady down pour continued. Unlike Thuisday and Friday, the last two days have seen an absence of the gale force wind. Many paddocks are under water and heavy flooding is likely in the back country. Among the many minor results of the deluge was the collapse of a brick wall at Hillcrest. Undermined, the whole wall, which was about four feet high, toppled over, breaking up as it fell towards the* road.
