The Rangitaiki sub-Branch of the Plunket Society requests the support of the public at its last meeting, Lo be held, in the Edgecumbe Hall on Friday, August 23rd, The serA'ices of the Plunket nurse are a-A-ailable fortnightly at present, in the homes, but if there is* not a sufficient attendance at the meeting to form a committee, the service Avill have to be discontinued. When it Avas reported to the Waikato Presbytery that it Avas the Goa 7ernment's intention to introduce Avet canteens into territorial camps, Avhere many of the trainees were under 21 years of age, Presbytery registered its protest against the proposal, and referred the matter to the Church courts Avith a request that they also take action. One defendant of a minor traffic offence avlio appeared before the Opotiki Magistrate's Court on Monday AA T as severely reprimanded for his apparent lack of respect for thf court. Entering the courtroom Avith a cigarette in his mouth and with a considerable slouch, he stood before the Magistrate Avith one hand in his pocket. According to a proclamation gazetted, the .junior N.C O.'s and men of the Ist Battalion, Hauraki Regiment (Territorials) arc to go in to camp on October 1. Officers and N.C.O.'s are at present undergoing training, officers, from Whakatane being included in the number. Horse Fair. Farmers and- others interested are reminded that the Whakatane Spring Horse Fair will be held on Tuesday, August 13, commencing at 11 a.m. sharp. The list so far includes 175 horses and Avith further entries it is expected that OA r er 200 will be offered. The auctioneers are the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agcncy Co. Ltd. and Daigety and Co. R.| Taylor, popular Department of Agri culture representative in Whakatane, \yas his broadcast from IYA oii Monday evening. Mr Taylor revealed himself as a fluent and able speaker over the air and many complimentary remarks have been made concerning the broadcast. The subject of his address was "The Advantages of Thorough Cultivation in . Root Crop Production," and this will be published as soon as opportunity offers.
