RACING NOTES

THE GRAND NATIONALS f The position in respect to the leading events to be decided at the Grand National meeting at Riccarton on 13 15 and 17 August has become somewhat clarified by the list of published acceptances. Many of the North Islanders engaged Avill be on thf scene by this week and the daily track work registered, will have the affect of bringing some of the entrants into greater prominence., while others will doubtless recede in' public favour. For the Grand National Steeplechase, of £1500, sy 2 miles, fifteen cross country horses have been listed' Padishah 12.fi, Clarion Call 12.1 and Erination 11.12 are at the head of the handicap. The top weight fell at the Well-' ington meeting, and later hurt a hind leg. At the moment he may not be yet at his best, but will require to be so on the day. Clarion Call ia such an undoubtedly fine jumper that his chance must be respected, but on his season's running Erination Avould have to be in at about 10.0 to have a chance of victory. The winner of the Wellington Steeplechase, Chat, 10.1 is well in and Southern sportsmen will incline to the possibilities of Slayer 10.12, Bally Brit 10.5, and Gold Wren 9.11. At 9.5 the Takaliini trained Dauber must be admitted to have a chance. He is a careful jumper with plenty of pace and stays well. . The Winter Gup, the Dominion's most solid mile race of the season, should again be run at a clipping pace. Catalogue 10.11, winner of the event in 1937, 1938 and 1939 will again essay the big task. His past record slioavs that lie must be given a big chance; Black Thread 9.13, Mit- ! tie 9.3, Alma 8.12, Lockit 8.11, The Wrecker 8.7 and Anita Foe 8.0 are at present in the favolirite division. The Grand National Hurdles, of 2 miles and a half, has an acceptance of 18, but the number may be lessened by the running of the Steeplechase. Included in the present fancies are Clarion! Call 11.12, JeAvelled Girdle 11.8, Streamline 10.12, Aussi--* I Ra 9.9 and Turaki 9.0.
