HERD IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION BALANCE SHEET PRESENTED Delegates were present from Kati Kati, Te Puke, Ohinepanea, Thornton, Otakiri, Edgecumbe, Awakeri, Whakatanc, Waimana, Nukuhou, Opotiki, Galatea, Te Karaka, Patutahi, Manutukc, Tolaga Bay, Waiupu, Wairoa and Gisbornc. for the annual general meeting of the Bay of Plenty and East Coast Herd-Im-provement Association (Inc.), held in Wliakatanc on Friday with Mr W, R. Boon in the chair. The balance sheet, presented by the secretary, Mr G. R. Kent, show ed a satisfactory position and the Income and Expenditure Statement, also tabled, revealed a total income of £7023 ISs 2d, this amount including the Dairy Board subsidy of £1541 lis sd. Presenting the directors' report, the president reviewed testing conditions and observed that the number of cows under test, 28,736, was not up to the number which it was expected the amalgamation would bring in. Scale of Fees. "Last season a part of the subsidy given for extra clerical work Avas handed back to testing members as a rebate on "all cows tested in each herd over 27 in number. The subsidy has been allotted again this year, but the Dairy Board have stated that it must be used for the purpose for which it is given, and the rebate cannot be given next season' 4 continued Mr Boon. "The scale ol fees for the 1940-41 season has been fixed as folloAVS:—. For herds up to 41 cows, £1 herd fee, plus 5s per cow; for herds 42 to 102 cows, £5 herd fee, plus 3s Id pei cow: for herds 103 and over, £8 hetd fee, plus 2s Gd per cow. Minimum fee £6. Two herds, one owner, over 100 cows, 5 per cent discount. Three herds or more, one owner, over 200 cows, 10 per cent discount. 'As last year the Dairy Board have offered a rebate to herds under consecutive test as follows: For 3rd and 4th season in succession, 10 per cent discount on fees; for' sth season in succession, 15 per cent discount on fees; for Gth and subsequent seasons in succession, 20* per cent discount on fees.. .These rebates will be deducted from the last monthly payment in February, 1941. Congratulations to Members. After remarking on the satisfactory financial position, Mr Boon congratulated the members topping ,the respective groups. These were: Class 1-20: Mr R. Brown, Gisborne, 4 cows, 4961bs of butterfat, 317 days; 21-' SO-: Mr A. R. Young, Wairoa, 21, 408, 282; 51-100: Mr W. L. Gread, Kati Kati North, Gl, 384,' 275; 101 and over: Mr J. Black, Edgecumbe, 112, 358, 272. A Fricsian owned byMr H. R- Swaine, Kati Kati South, gave the highest individual yield in producing G2Blbs fat in 308 days. Appeal for Assistance. "For the coming season I wish to appeal to members to give every assistance to the testing staff in carry ing out their duties by supplying them with all the particulars they require regarding the herd. Full particulars of all herds will assist the Dairy Board to compile statistics which are proving a great value to the Technical Officers of the Department of Agriculture in their investigations of many of the problems with which the dairy farmer is faced," said Mr Boon. "The Dairy Board Consulting Officer for this Association's territory is Mr M. Whitham, and most members will be visited by him during the year. Any assistance which members can give to Mr Whitham would be appreciated by your Board of Directors. "Mr W. J. Law has represented the Association on the Herd Recording Council and our thanks are due to him for his continued services. "In conclusion T wish to express my appreciation of the loyal support accorded me by my fellow Directors and to thank the Secretary and outside staff for their efficient work during the past season.'"
